Who We Are and What We Do!
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Reserve Unit is composed of citizen volunteers, who are sworn
to serve as a professional auxiliary to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. The Reserve Unit, is organized into two sub-units:
- Certified Reserve Deputies, who are trained to P.O.S.T. Law Enforcement certification standards, serve principally
as partner officers in the Field and Court Division.
- Jail Reserve Officers, are trained specifically to assist in the operation of the county jail.
Reserve applicants must meet the same criteria for appointment as full-time employees, and must undergo the
same rigorous selection process. Reserve officers are expected to contribute a minimum of 16 hours each month to the operations
of the Sheriff's Department. Processing for new Reserve Officers occurs on an open basis; for further information, please

As a volunteer extension of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, the Reserve Deputy Unit provides the following
community services:
Crime Awareness
Develops and implements crime prevention programs for the citizens of DeKalb County; instructs citizens on how to safeguard
themselves against violent crimes through involvement in Neighborhood Watch Programs.
Drug Awareness
Develops and implements drug awareness programs in the local schools, churches, and civic organizations; advises how
to recognize illegal control substances and their promoters and how to protect communities from illegal activities.
Community Relations
Provides a composite of charitable funds for activities that have a particular significance to law enforcement
and public safety for the citizens of DeKalb County.
